Anchor in the midst of the change

2Ki 22:1 Josiah was eight years old when he became king. He ruled for thirty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jedidah daughter of Adaiah; she was from Bozkath.

Reading through 2 Kings, it is mind-blowing. A child of 8 years old became king. I look at my nephews who are 14 and 10 and I struggle to imagine them ruling over the house, forget about over the country. And that started me thinking... What happened to the generations? How did children loses the idea of responsible; From a child who understood the responsibility of ruling over a country to one that is who to rule over his xBox?

Joisah was thrust into the limelight but still there has been a change in the generations and how they see the world. Joisah's world was thrown into chaos with the death of the previous king. The incline is to look towards the advisers who presided in the court or other things. Instead Joisah, who was taught the Word of God from young by his mother, turns the Word for wisdom to rule. I believe this changed his life and the course of history for Israel.

In the midst of the chaotic changes in him and the nation of Israel, the Word of God anchor Joisah with wisdom and provided the nation of Israel with a firm foundation of justice and righteousness.

In some ways the new generations are smarter and quicker to adapt to technology in comparison to the older generations. But one cannot help in thinking; are there things which they have lost. Each generation have their own problems; their pros and cons but I believe that some things do not change and there has to be a stability factor in the lives of the generations in order to keep them stable. There are some things that cannot be compromise; family, values, love and the word of family. The heavy reliance on social media and other technology which "virtual" connects us, the ability to connect face-to-face is lost.

Regardless of the generations, what this proves one thing; the Word of God produces a solid foundation for a child regardless of the generation he/she lives up in. The stability of God's Word is a necessity in any life, proven to be a solid ground to grow from for any person. Joisah was taught the ways of God by his mother and the priests of the day, which established a strong grounding for his days as king of Israel. On the side note, I believe what Joisah's mother did right as well as to surround him with wise and godly advisors and mentors. This helps to breath life into his life and his relationship with God.

Interesting thoughts for us today. What are the grounding factors for our lives as we grow? And in the lives of our children? Wiggles? TV? Movies? Internet? or the Word of God?
